Synopsis

Jon loves his brother, Dean. Jon loves his wife, Sandy. Hell he even loves his black lab, Cato. What Jon does not love is trying to get Dean out of a murder charge, calling his father who lives in Mexico with bad news, or trying to run a civil law practice in Richmond and a criminal case in Victoria. Normally doing only civil law, Jon rationalizes that his brother, if found guilty, can petition for a re-trial on the basis of incompetent representation.

Jon and Sandy quickly go to Victoria where Dean is incarcerated. Initial reports say that Betts and both of their children have been killed. The crime scene, Dean’s home, has the appearance of an interrupted robbery with a broken window and dirt from the flowerbed on the floor, pointing to some unknown assailant. But the murder weapon is Dean’s revolver and the only identifiable fingerprint on the gun is his. And there was the time Betts called the police saying that Dean was trying to kill her. Jon does what he does best and calls in ace forensic pathologist Bardwil Ricter to evaluate the crime scene. Forced to prioritize most painfully, Jon hires another attorney to help with his Richmond caseload, if she can get anything done from the staff’s dog house. Daphne and Maureen weren’t looking for someone to invade their work domain.

Meanwhile back in Richmond, the Lamar Mustang football team, led by all-state running back Costiss, is marching to the Texas State AAAA football championship. The post-season party is interrupted by a screaming woman claiming to have been raped by Costiss and another boy on the team. Jon does his civic duty and with the aid of Bardwil Ricter’s excellent forensic work defends Costiss. Mayhem, alleged and real, keeps the championship title up in the air and players in jail. Jon’s previous distraction now becomes another criminal case—this one to save Chris’s future.
