Juan Manuel Casas was born in El Paso, Texas. He is a graduate of California Southern Law School and Trinity College & University. He and his wife Arlene reside in Murrieta, CA.

Juan wrote his first book, "Federico Villalba's Texas: A Mexican Pioneer's Life in the Big Bend," as a gift for his mother Herminia -- "Minnie" as she is called by her friends and loved ones. She asked her eldest son to write something about her grandfather that could be shared with the family. She wanted her familia to know of the contributions Federico had made as one of the first Mexican pioneers to arrive in the Big Bend. Five years, many trips to the region and many interviews later, Juan had a piece of work that many of his relatives said was "worthy of publication." There was no other book available that chronicled the history of the region from the Mexican perspective.
